DOUBLESPEAK EXPLAINED -- Professor Lutz

William D. Lutz is an American linguist who specializes in the use of plain language and the avoidance of doublespeak

How Misleading Language Ruins Our Lives:
The New Doublespeak and the Communications Crisis (1996)

Beyond Nineteen Eighty-Four: Doublespeak in a Post-Orwellian Age, by author William Lutz.  (Photo above).

This book probes the efforts at manipulation individuals face daily in this information age and the tactics of persuaders from many sectors of society using various forms of Orwellian "doublespeak." .

He has included among many essays in his book:
"Political Language: The Art of Saying Nothing" (Dan F. Hahn) which is what politicians are an expert at this language manipulation and why people are so easily persuaded to actually believe in them.

This is a must read book to understand where we are today!  The history is fascinating and has been used, I suggest, since the beginning of written and verbal language.

Mr. Lutz dedicated his career to educating people to recognize and combat the language designed to mislead and misinform.

NOTE:
[Newspeak in the dystopian novel by George Orwell "1984" is a controlled language of simplified grammar and restricted vocabulary designed to limit the individual's ability to think and articulate "subversive" concepts such as personal identity, self-expression and free will.]

Doublespeak Award

Doublespeak is often used by politicians for the advancement of their agenda.

The Doublespeak Award is an "ironic tribute to public speakers who have perpetuated language that is grossly deceptive, evasive, euphemistic, confusing, or self-centered." It has been issued by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) since 1974.

The recipients of the Doublespeak Award are usually politicians, national administration or departments. An example of this is the United States Department of Defense, which won the award three times in 1991, 1993, and 2001.

For the 1991 award, the United States Department of Defense "swept the first six places in the Doublespeak top ten" for using euphemisms like "servicing the target" (bombing) and "force packages" (warplanes).

Among the other phrases in contention were "difficult exercise in labor relations", meaning a strike, and "meaningful downturn in aggregate output", an attempt to avoid saying the word "recession".
